Your Local Concreters for Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant climbs the lower slopes of the Illawarra Escarpment north-west of the Wollongong CBD, above Balgownie and Fairy Meadow and with bushland of the escarpment state conservation area right behind the top streets. The suburb has roots in the early coal-mining days of the Illawarra, but most of what you see today is residential: older brick and fibro homes on the lower streets, and larger, newer houses higher up where the views stretch out over the coastal plain to the ocean. Wollongong Concrete Driveways builds concrete driveways, concrete steps, paths and outdoor areas here for owners dealing with some of the steepest blocks in the northern suburbs.

Slope is the defining feature of almost every job in Mount Pleasant. Driveways often rise or fall sharply from the street, so we plan transition grades at the kerb to stop cars scraping, and choose a broom or exposed aggregate finish so tyres and shoes keep their grip in the wet. Cut-and-fill is common, which usually means retaining walls and careful stormwater control so heavy downpours are carried to the street rather than across the slab or into a neighbour's yard. Parts of the escarpment foothills are mapped by council as landslip risk areas, and on those sites excavation and retaining can need geotechnical advice before work goes ahead.

Why choose us

What Mount Pleasant Clients Get From Us

Comfortable on Steep Sites

Pumping concrete uphill, forming on a slope and finishing a steep driveway without the mix slumping all take experience. We plan access, pump placement and pour sequence before the truck arrives.

Grip Comes First

On a slope, a slippery finish is a real hazard. We recommend textures and sealers that balance appearance with traction, and we explain how each option behaves when wet or mossy.

Drainage Thought Through

We look at where water comes from upslope as well as where it needs to go, so new concrete does not create problems for your house, retaining walls or the property below.

Straight Talk on Approvals

Steep blocks often raise questions about retaining walls, landslip areas and crossovers. We tell you what we know, and point you to council or a certifier where a proper answer is needed.

Pours Planned Around the Weather

Illawarra rain can arrive quickly off the escarpment. We watch the forecast, have covers ready and would rather reschedule than pour into a downpour.

Clear Written Quotes

Our quotes set out excavation, retaining, base, reinforcement, finish, drainage and clean-up, so you can see exactly where the money goes on a challenging site.

FAQs

Concrete Questions From Mount Pleasant

These are some of the questions Mount Pleasant homeowners ask most often about driveways, steps and retaining walls on steep blocks.

There is no single answer, because it depends on your block, the street levels and what council will accept for the crossover. Very steep driveways are possible, but the transitions at the top and bottom need to be designed so cars do not scrape or bottom out. Council has guidelines for driveway gradients and the section across the footpath, so it is worth checking these before finalising a design. We measure the levels on site and talk you through what is practical.

Wollongong City Council maps parts of the escarpment foothills as geotechnical or landslip risk areas, and some Mount Pleasant properties fall within them. If yours does, excavation, fill and retaining walls may need input from a geotechnical engineer and sometimes development consent. You can check with council or look at your planning certificate. We will not start cut-and-fill work on a mapped site until the right advice is in place.

Some low retaining walls can be exempt development under the NSW Exempt and Complying Development Codes if they meet the conditions, which generally include a height limit of around 600 mm, distance from boundaries and no effect on drainage. Taller walls, walls near boundaries or structures, and walls on landslip-affected land usually need a development application or complying development certificate and engineering. Always confirm with council or a certifier before building.

For steep driveways, grip matters more than anything. A coarse broom finish or exposed aggregate generally gives good traction in the wet, and a non-slip additive can be mixed into the sealer. Smooth, honed or polished finishes are not well suited to steep outdoor slopes. On shaded sites, sealing also helps keep moss at bay, which makes a big difference to safety.

Most Mount Pleasant streets are fine for a truck, but steep or narrow driveways sometimes mean the concrete has to be pumped. A line pump or boom pump can reach rear yards, upper levels and spots trucks cannot get to. We look at access when we quote and include the pump if it is needed, so there are no surprises on the day.
